Why should I  get  my gutters cleaned?

Like many aspects of home owning, keeping your property well maintained is very important. Guttering needs to be cleaned on a regular basis.

The build up of moss, leaves, weeds and tile sand can cause the gutters to become blocked. The weight of this along with the water when it rains can cause the guttering to warp, split and become detached from the building. In some cases, water will cascade down the walls of the building, and over a prolonged period will cause damp problems.

Regular gutter cleaning really can save you money!

Why should I use Gutta Clean?

I have many years experience in gutter cleaning and repairs.  I am polite, honest and conscientious, and carry out a good job as I want my customers to come back year after year - my 5 star reviews are testament to this.

I am local, living in Goring.

Beware - certain companies on the internet claim to be local but are, in fact, national companies subcontracting the work out at highly inflated prices.

How often should I get my gutters cleaned?

This really depends on a few factors: Amount of moss on your roof, whether you are close to trees and if you have gulls nesting on your roof every year. Roofs covered in a lot of moss will cause gutters to block more quickly, so twice a year is preferable.
Also, being close to trees often warrants two cleans a year.

How do you clean out gutters?

I mainly clean out gutters with a high powered industrial wet and dry vacuum cleaner and connected tubes and various attachments. Using the machine allows easy cleaning of awkward to reach places, like over conservatories, and ensures the gutters are totally clear.

It is also safer than climbing a ladder and cleaning can be carried out in windy conditions, where this would not be safe using a ladder.

My downpipe is blocked.  Can you fix it?

Downpipes can block at the top due to moss, leaves etc, and also at the bottom.  I often find downpipes which enter the ground, usually running into a soakaway, block at the bottom.  This is most often due to a build up over many years of debris.  I successfully unblock most of these by removing the downpipe and sucking out the blockage.  It can take time as the blockage can be several feet along the underground pipe.  On occasions, it may not be possible to fix, as the whole soakaway can be blocked.  This would require a new soakaway.  Alternatively, the downpipe can be modified to allow it to terminate above the ground and run into the nearest drain.

Do you wash soffits and fascias?

Further to clearing out gutters, I offer a cleaning service, wiping down the guttering, fascias and soffits. The plastic type gutters shine like new after I have cleaned them! Please note, I do NOT use a pressure washer, as this forces water into the roof space and can cause damp on internal ceilings. It also causes a lot of mess, after all it is just moving the dirt and grime to another place (namely your windows, car etc).  All soffit and fascia cleaning is carried out by hand, usually in the summer months.

My gutters are broken. Do you carry out repairs?

Yes, I carry out general repairs to gutters, like replacing brackets, fixing leaks, replacing rubber seals etc.  There is a small charge for this as it is not included in the price of the clean.  I also replace lengths of guttering and install down pipes.  I would offer a quote for this work.

How much do you charge?

I take pride in my work and offer the best service at the best price! I guarantee this.

Gutter hedgehogs, or gutter brushes, look a bit like a huge pipe cleaner. The are placed into the guttering with the aim of stopping the gutters from getting blocked with moss, leaves etc. Do they work? The simple answer is "no". The muck washes down and accumulates underneath the brushes, making blockages even more likely than not having the brushes installed! The photos show two lengths of guttering AFTER the brushes were removed.

I often get called out to houses, bungalows etc. where the owner has reported the guttering as needing cleaning out as it's blocked and leaking. On some occasions, the cause of the leak can indeed be due to the gutters being blocked with moss and debris, or the top of a downpipe being clogged. But that's only half of the story. Quite often the problem lies with the guttering itself, usually where two lengths of guttering is joined. This join is called a union and comprised a plastic joiner with two rubber gaskets. Over time, the gaskets perish and become hard, losing their rubber properties. This lets water through the join when it rains. If the union leaks even when the rain has stopped for some time, then this is caused by water sitting in the gutter as it has not flowed away correctly. Repairing gutters is something I do. Changing unions is a frequent job. They are inexpensive and will last for years. If rainwater pools in the gutter, then the fall of the gutter needs correcting. This is more tricky as when one section of gutter is altered, it can affect the fall further along the run. Another cause of leaks is guttering that has pulled away from the fascia boards. This is most often caused by rotting wooden fascias, and although a repair can usually be carried out, the fascias should really be replaced with platcic.
Muck in the vac after a gutter clean on a terraced house
By damianplevans 06 Nov, 2023
Have you ever wondered what is in your gutters? Well, in many areas the answer is moss. In heavy rain, a lot of the moss on your roof washed into the gutters. Also, birds tend to pick at the moss and throw it into the gutters. I'm not sure this is intentional, but I'd guess they are looking for bugs or larvae to eat. Anyway, the moss, once vacuumed out, looks like the photo - a load of muck!! So next time you look at your roof, if you see moss on it, it's very likely you have moss in your gutters.

The weather has been truly awful of late, after a not so great summer. All the rain has highlighted problems that were un-noticed before - blocked downpipes, overflowing gutters and damp inside properties, to name but a few. Blocked downpipes have been a more frequent occurrence lately, probably due to the amount of rain we've had, and the intensity of it. I have been finding lots of moss build up in downpipes, often cause by bits of roof debris (bits of broken tile, mortar etc) wedged inside the downpipe causing an obstruction. The moss quickly piles up behind it, and, before you know it, you have a waterfall cascading down the side of your house!

This job was particularly awkward as the property at the rear was an L shape due to having an extension, and a conservatory had been built in the gap. This made it difficult to reach the conservatory gutters, and not wishing to climb onto a roof with quite loose tiles and ridge caps, the only solution was to use the vac and poles. The vac coped well cleaning out two wide gutters / gulleys full of moss with a thick covering of leaves.
